Mission Statement:

Bethany Presbyterian Church, a multicultural community of faith where hope, humor, and joy prevail, has served the Oak Lawn and surrounding areas of Dallas for over 114 years.

We are actively dedicated to the ministry of:

- demonstrating Christian inclusiveness
- striving for social justice
- proclaiming God's loving forgiveness and acceptance

Celebrating the common thread and commitment that unites us, we move with hope and confidence into a second century of witness and service to a world in need.

More Light Statement:

Bethany Presbyterian Church, a “More Light Presbyterian" congregation, welcomes all persons into the membership and ministry of this congregation without regard to race, ethnic origin, gender, marital status, handicap, age, sexual orientation, worldly condition, or any other reason not related to profession of faith.

Vision Statement:

Through a ministry that is vibrant and inviting, always striving to reflect the love and justice of Christ, we commit ourselves to:

  • EVANGELISM
    - inviting all persons to active ministry in Christ by working for growth and renewal of the congregation.

  • JUSTICE
-striving to redress wrongs in every aspect of life and the whole of creation, working with the poor, powerless, and disenfranchised, whom Jesus embraced, even at risk to our corporate and personal lives.

  • SPIRITUAL FORMATION
-gathering as a community of faith to worship, study and reflect on Scripture, praying with one another for insight and clarity, so that the Holy Spirit might mold our lives more into the image of God.

  • PARTNERSHIP
-forming caring relationships with one another, marked by mutual respect, openness, tolerance and forgiveness

Open, Caring, Inclusive, Multicultural

OPEN

Bethany gathers as a community of faith to worship, study, and share fellowship, hoping to gain insight and understanding so that our lives might greater reflect the image of God. We invite all persons to active membership and ministry and encourage personal and congregational growth. We also encourage progressive theological exploration while maintaining a strong bond with the Reformed tradition.

CARING

Bethany members and friends cherish authentic and caring relationships with one another, marked by mutual respect, openness, tolerance and forgiveness.Bethany places great emphasis on: the time we spend together in meaningful fellowship; sharing personal joys and concerns during worship; nurturing our children and youth; open communication, including the monthly Becoming newsletter; pastoral care and Congregational Care programs. We strive to redress wrongs in every aspect of life by working with the poor, powerless and disenfranchised through a strong Social Action ministry, including such projects as food and clothing drives, AIDS LifeWalk and Bryan's House, English as a Second Language programs, house building/repair, peacemaking, community action, special programs on issues like mental illness, literacy, the environment, and immigration.

INCLUSIVE / MULTICULTURAL

Bethany understands the complexity and diversity of the neighborhoods we serve and responds to the opportunities and challenges that we face. As a 'More Light Presbyterian' congregation, we reach out to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community by including all persons into membership and ministry without regard to sexual orientation.

Bethany also extends a welcoming and inclusive hand to the Hispanic/ Latino/Latina community. Services of worship in Spanish are offered three Sundays in each month, with a monthly 'combined' bilingual service, with Communion. We also offer fellowship, church leadership opportunities, and educational programs in Spanish.
